Staffing 2023
Mrs Barbara Harrip has been recruited to replace Mrs Bridie McCarthy while she is on leave for the remainder of the year. Barbara is a highly experienced teacher who has taught for the Department of Education in a range of schools in Sydney and Regional NSW. Mrs Harrip has taught English 7-12 including English Standard, Advanced and Extension; Ancient & Modern History and Society & Culture.
Mrs Katrina Cook has been recruited to join our Office / Administration Team due to the additional support hours allocated in 2023. Katrina has a wealth of experience in administration and you may encounter her on Reception when she is rostered in that role.
We warmly welcome both Barbara and Katrina to the College.
Mrs Julie Rinkin has decided to conclude her position with the College after many years to explore other opportunities. Julie has been a dedicated member of staff who has worked in the general office with a particular role in Student Services. Julie's commitment to the College, her expertise in a wide variety of administration areas - in particular Compass; her attention to detail, and care for and interest in students are just some of the skills and attributes that she has that are highly valued and that 'add value' to the College.
While it is always sad to have staff leave our community, there is also a sense that they will be anticipating the excitement of new experiences and challenges and will hopefully take a little of the Josephite Charism wherever they go! As a community we wish Julie all the best for the future

CCTV at St Joseph's Lochinvar
We have had a series of CCTV cameras installed in the avenue and in the vicinity to MacKillop Place primarily to provide a higher level of security since the Sisters of St Joseph have moved off site. The cameras are not monitored on a regular basis but we can login and review dates and times if there are matters of concern.
Please be advised that the cameras are not located in classrooms.
Student Hub
Our new Student Hub containing the Yalawa Centre, Penola Learning Centre, Counsellors and Within the Gates Officer is now well established and provides a wonderful space where additional support is integrated and students can gather for meetings, as well as academic and wellbeing support. Located in the former convent of the Sisters we are very blessed to have this additional building available to accommodate staff and students.

Fee Payments
Just a reminder to parents that fee payments should now have commenced in order for you to be able to acquit the debt by November 30th 2023. It is expected that parents / carers will be making regular weekly or fortnightly payments. If you find yourself in financial difficulty or are seeking a concession it is urgent that you contact either myself or Mrs Cathy Duff, our Senior Finance Officer to discuss your situation. We know cost of living increases have impacted the family budget and our school budget so want to work with you.
Strictly no parking or pick up in St Patrick's Lochinvar Visitor Car Park
We have had concerns raised by St Patrick's regarding the number of parents of St Joseph's students who are parking in their visitor car park on the New England Highway and waiting for SJL students to cross the road for pick up. This is causing considerable concern in regard to congestion, limiting access to those legitimately visiting St Patrick's and causing concern for student safety.
It has been noted that parents are parking in the disabled space along with the no parking area (identified by painted markings) and also queuing in the driveway, preventing access in and out. Students from SJL have been observed walking through the carpark to get into cars, as if the area is a collection point.
I would ask that any parent engaged in this process stop immediately to ensure student safety. It is inappropriate for St Patrick's staff to have to manage a problem created by parents of St Joseph's students. We have a well established routine for student pick up in the front of MacKillop Place which is supervised by staff that I would ask you to take advantage of when collecting your child.
Many thanks for your anticipated understanding and support.
Morning drop off of students
Just a reminder that supervision does not commence until 8am and therefore no student should be onsite before that time – please do not drop off your child just because the drive in gate is open.
Road rules on site
Parents and those who drop off and pick up students are reminded that road rules apply within and around all of areas of the school apply and that no-one is above the law – imperative in all of this is the safety and wellbeing of students, parents and staff. There are two pedestrian crossings in school grounds – cars must not park on or within 20 metres before and 10 metres after a children's' crossing or pedestrian crossing
Attendance
Education in New South Wales is compulsory. Specifically, in NSW students are required to commence school by age 6, complete Year 10 and remain at school until they reach the age of 17 or be enrolled in approved education or training for example TAFE, or be in full time employment (average 25 hours per week) or in a combination of work, education / training.
The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the NSW Education and Standards Authority for home schooling.
Regular attendance at school is essential if students are to maximise their potential. Schools, in partnership with parents/carers, are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students. While parents/carers are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their children, school staff monitor part or whole day absences as part of their duty of care for students’ welfare.
The Importance of arriving on time - Arriving at school and class on time:
- Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
- Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
- Give students time to greet their friends before class
- Reduces classroom disruption
Note - Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.
What if my child has to be away from school?
On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
- being sick, or having an infectious disease
- having an unavoidable medical appointment
- being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
- exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)
Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide the school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 3 days, the school will contact you to discuss the absence.
Remember that parents can provide an explanation for absence via Compass or notifying student services.
Travel / Holidays
Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, parents need to apply to the principal for leave at least 2 weeks prior to the leave. A Leave Notification will then be completed and forwarded to parents. Arrangements for assessment tasks during the leave will be identified – note that in class assessment tasks during the time of leave will likely have zero recorded which will impact on a student’s report and GPA. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.

Ministry Musings

Last week Year 12 attended retreat at the Edmund Rice Retreat Centre - Winbourne, in Mulgoa. This Retreat is a crucial component to the spiritual development of our students, providing them with an opportunity to take time to ponder on their lives, relationships with others, and God. It is a chance for them to heed Mary MacKillop's call to "believe in the whisperings of God in your own heart."
Additionally, Year 12 students explored the challenges they were presented with at the beginning of the Retreat, which was to "to be present and open to the opportunities presented", in which all students did. During the Retreat, students withdrew themselves from the usual routines and constant demands of everyday life, consciously setting aside time to change their focus to introspectively examine oneself and come together as a community to reflect. Students took time to explore and nurture their spirituality while aligning it with the Josephite values of living simply, being present in the moment, trusting in God's will, practicing compassion, and service. They participated in various activities that helped them build friendships, connections, lasting memories and unpacked how they would apply their knowledge once they have stepped back into everyday life.
We extend our gratitude and thanks to all the students, for their participation in the various activities. Furthermore, thank you to all the staff who volunteered their time to guide our students through the retreat.

From the Assistant Principals....
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope that students and parents had a restful Easter break. Most students, particularly year 11, will be receiving results from their first assessment tasks. This is a worthwhile opportunity to examine these tasks, not in terms of their mark or grade, but what learning can come from them. I would encourage students to really focus on the feedback and the suggestions contained within.
It is also and good time for students to critically examine their home learning techniques, environment and strategies. I have often asked students to follow the process of ‘Learn it, Know it, Practice it’.
Learn It
- Learn it refers to being taught the content in-class and revising your notes
- When students revise their class notes on a regular basis, they are helping the brain to develop stronger neural pathways to this information. This is the building blocks of being able to recall, apply and analyse information.
- Revising your notes means that you;
- read over your notes, highlighting key facts and information
Know It
- Know It refers to making summaries of your highlighted notes
- To create a summary of your notes, you can
- re-write the highlighted notes
- write the highlighted notes into different categories – black pen for big ideas, blue pen for details, red pen for dates and equations
- create mind maps
Practice It
- Practice It refers to processes you use to continue to develop a deeper understanding of the content. Students who ‘Practice it’ will;
- create quizzes for either themselves or others to test them. Quizlet is a good website that students can use to do this found from the link below.
- talk about the summaries with other people
- complete past test papers or online resources such as Mathletics
- for seniors, complete all formative tasks, apply the feedback and then re-submit the task for further feedback.
In addition, I have included two infographics that contain good information about learning and studying habits.

Year 7 and 8 Assessment Handbook
At the beginning of Term 2, the Year 7 and 8 Assessment handbook was distributed to families. This handbook represents a change in the focus of assessment in Stage 4 to be more holistic and learning centred. Through the utilisation of evidence based practices, the school has looked at how to engage students in Year 7 and 8 to reflect and use teacher and peer feedback to enhance their learning experience in the completion of their tasks. Therefore, students have a Feedback checkpoint calendar which indicates when students will receive feedback from their teachers on their learning. This will also be reflected in the Stage 4 reports delivered each Semester.
A copy of the handbook can be found on Compass ~ School Documentation ~ 2023 Assessment Handbooks and has been distributed to families via email.
Year 11 2024 Subject Selection Evening
On Monday 29th May, current Year 10 students and their families are invited to attend the Year 11 2024 Subject Selection evening. This is an important event for all students who are moving onto Year 11 in 2024. This evening will feature a range of presentations from staff and students about subject choices, as well as having an opportunity to engage with teachers about the content of each course. In preparation for this occurring, Year 10 have participated in Transition Preparation lessons which provides an insight into the process.
Year 10 will receive a copy of the subject selection handbook in Week 5.

Wellbeing

Students are looking fresh and have come prepared to learn and give back to the school community.
We would like to begin by thanking students for their participation and behaviour celebrating St Joseph’s Day, Wednesday W10.
It was a fantastic day with a range of activities such as dunking station, giant slide, bungee run, silent disco and much more.
A congratulations also to Angelina Sater, who was the winner of the Fully signed Tigers jersey. Students where given tickets in the raffle for displaying Josephite qualities and contributing to school community and learning environments.
The Wellbeing Team would also like to thank the Senior Leaders for all of their ideas, time and effort they put into wellbeing initiatives last year. They have blossomed in the leadership positions they have been given and continue to do themselves and the wider school community proud.

Breakfast Club
After some extensive planning the LOWPC Team are very excited to announce that our school will be running a breakfast club at school.
This program will give students the opportunity to eat a wholesome nutritious breakfast, with added benefits such as an improved capacity to concentrate and do your best in class, as well as the space providing an opportunity to be social and build friendships.
The program will initially run each Wednesday morning, beginning Week 3 Term 2 with potential to expand in the future.
Breakfast Club will be held in the Penola Centre (the New Student Learning HUB space near The Bertrand Centre). Students will be assisted by senior students & teaching staff to make themselves something for breakfast. The breakfast items available will include toast, spreads, cereals, milk and fresh fruit.
Breakfast will be available from 8 - 8:40am. Being mindful that students will need to be packed up & ready for FLEXI LEARNING which commences at 8:45am.
We are very grateful to Woolworths Rutherford for generously sponsoring the program - there was no hesitation when we reached out for their support. Paul & his team were only too willing to support children from the local & surrounding areas. Their provision of the necessary grocery items ensures that we can run this valuable program that will aim to serve many of the needs of our students. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Paul and his team at Rutherford Woolworths for helping us to get it started & to sustain it well into the future.
We are looking forward to a positive Term 2.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Welcome to Term 2 of Religious Education at St Joseph’s College.
The Religious Education team are excited for the term ahead and look forward to embracing active learning, engaging in creative pedagogy to engage students in their Religious Education journey and continuing to seek excellence in all students. This term is a busy term in RE, with Religious Literacy Test for Year 8 and upcoming Formatives for Year 7 and Summative Tasks for Year 9 and 10.
As a reminder, Religious Education at St Joseph’s College aims to provide students with opportunities to research and critically reflect upon religious, social and moral questions within the context of the Catholic Tradition and become familiar with some of the religious traditions that are part of multicultural, multifaith Australian society.
The courses from 7-10 provide students with a systematic and thorough study of Catholicism by allowing opportunities to develop skills of critical reflection, social analysis, encounter and moral decision making within the Christian context.
The skills developed in the RE classroom far transcend Religious Education and should benefit students in their post school life. We aim to help students understand differing world views, appreciate cultural and religious difference, and recognise the inherent dignity of each individual through the Catholic lens. This will allow our students to become global citizens with ability to empathise, respect, and enact social change.
As a reminder, Year 9 and 10 students across the Catholic Diocese of Maitland Newcastle will be engaging in the new curriculum that aims to promote deep thinking through exploration and enquiry. Driven by contemporary teaching practices and a pedagogy of encounter, we will aim to create a learning space that encourages students to explore the world around them. This will allow them to become better decision makers and problem solvers as they learn to take in differing views and stand points and be confident in articulating what they believe to be true.
As a teaching team we are excited for the term ahead and look forward to exploring the new curriculum with our students.
How To Support Your Child’s Religious Education Journey:
You can support us at home by helping to ensure your child comes to class prepared. All students will need an exercise book, pen and CHARGED device. The Religion Faculty use the learning platform ‘OneNote’ to aid in the delivery of teaching and learning experiences. Therefore, it is very important that your child has a charged device for each lesson. Should your child be away, they can log on to the OneNote to catch up on any work missed.
Year 8 Students in particular will require a charged device to complete their Religious Literacy Task in Week 6. If you have concerns regarding access to a device please ensure you touch base with our IT support staff.
If there are any issues concerning your child and their Religious Education the first and best port of call is for them to speak directly to their teacher.

ANZAC Day – 2023
25th April 2023 – ANZAC Day
This year, our College Leaders were invited by the President of the Maitland RSL Sub-branch to participate in the 2023 ANZAC Day Memorial Service, held on Tuesday 25th April 2023 at the Maitland Park World War 1 Cenotaph. The College was represented on the day by leaders, Demi, Baley, and Tess who each read a prayer as part of the ceremony with Joseph, Emma and Baiden also in attendance, laying a wreath on behalf of the College. All these students represented the College with pride, honour and respect for those who have served and continue to serve our nation. Shortly following this event, the College received a written letter of thanks from Mr Graham Solomons JP, Hon Secretary, Maitland RSL Sub-Branch passing on thanks to the College and in particular the students in attendance, acknowledging that “All students performed well in the deliverance of their prayers”. Thank you to our leaders for attending this service and so beautifully representing our College.
St Joseph’s College – ANZAC Day Ceremony
On Friday, 28th April 2023, the St Joseph's College community gathered for the College’s annual 2023 ANZAC Day Commemorative Ceremony to pay tribute to, and remember, all those who have served and continue to serve our nation in times of war, conflict or in humanitarian missions. This year, Stage 5 History students engaged in activities to acknowledge, in particular, the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. To recognise the 521 lives lost, our ceremony was adorned with 521 individual soliders, marked with names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War. A moving commemorative address was provided by Mr Gordon Lawson, Vietnam Veteran, and wreaths with poppies, personalised by staff and students, were laid in honour of those who have died, and those who were or are impacted by war. All students in attendance demonstrated the upmost respect toward our guest speaker and demonstrated reverence throughout the entire ceremony that included key roles performed by a number of Stage 5 students. Well done to the HSIE Faculty and Stage 5 History students for putting together such a moving ceremony and we thank Mr Lawson for giving up his time to inform and engage the SJL regarding his experiences of servicing Australia in the Vietnam War.
Lest we forget.
